A statement from the Indonesian government said Minister Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan also met with Trump advisers, Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump, as well as the director general of the International Development Finance Corporation (DFC), Adam Boehler.
“At the meeting, (Minister) sent a telegram of congratulations, gratitude and appreciation from President Joko Widodo for the continued support and cooperation between the Presidents of Indonesia and the United States of America.”
The president is expected to attend the actual APEC summit on Friday, but his participation will be limited to closed private events. It is unclear whether Trump will attend a virtual G20 summit this weekend, hosted by Saudi Arabia. If he does not, Trump will be the first US president not to appear at the G20 since the group began its summit in 2008.
In that context, the relatively rare meeting with the Foreign Minister has raised some eyebrows. Like his conversations with Trump, Luhut has additional meetings with Vice President Mike Pence and National Security Adviser Robert O’Brien. He discussed “US-Indonesia Joint Vaccine Production” with Pence and “Indonesia-US Strategic Partnership on Defense and Technology, While Sharing Global Geographic Topics” with O’Brien.
The readings also contain cautious remarks about the post-election relationship between Indonesia and the United States.
“On behalf of President Joko Widodo, I would like to express my gratitude and appreciation to President Donald Trump.” We will always be friends. I also hope that such good communication with the White House can be established after January 2021. “
The White House did not respond to a CNN request for comment.
